Take the bus half a block away? Then, go about and pretend the city streets are a sport? Waddle towards stuff (especially if they have purpose or intention), and get close? I don't play real sports or follow coach stuff but this sounds fun.

Hi all,

I'm the new geek on the block just wondering where all the other geeks are... seems kinda dead in here.

Did everyone overdose on local sci-fi conventions or something? Is it open season on geeks or what?

hheellloooooooo...... echo, echo, echo, echo

sure writing here in NH in the winter, the sound of the oil burner cranking away. The fact that my nose sticks together when I take my first breath outside. Colddd, yes, I know I live here but only by default. Here's what I'm thinking.....let's all forget that the world is round grrr who came up with that!? Let's stop and think if it were flat......the sun would be the same distance constantly equal summer winter heck night and day too! No more dealing with friends being 3 to 5 to 12 hours away via timezones. Curses round.

Have you ever wanted em ? I think theyre technically called flash pots, but yeah we all know what they are. I mean imagine you're at a party, and your ex comes walkin in, and you're already a little buzzed, so you dont want to talk to them anyways. Wouldnt it be great to be able to dissappear in a cloud of smoke ? just yell "NINJA SMOKE BOMB!!!" and then throw one on the ground. *Poof!* you dissappear.

uhm.

thats it.

uh...what are you all looking at ?

I just realized where the sine, cosine, and tangent functions came from. And then I felt really stupid. And then I realized that while I'd had quite a few trigonometric equations involving them crammed down my throat in high school, no one ever bothered to give me this little tidbit of knowledge. Why are schools taught this way?

Premises:

The more friends you have, the better you feel about yourself.
The better you feel about yourself, the more confident you are.
The more confident you are, the more at ease you are when dealing with strangers.
The more at ease you are when dealing with strangers, the better their impression of you will be.
The better their impression of you is, the better the chance that you will become friends with them.

Conclusion:

When you need friends the most is when it's hardest to make them.

Isn't the human condition fun?

So I'll go for months without writing anything at all, and then I'll spontaneously generate shit like this:

I've got this stoat, man, he's stoat-tastic
Like, the way his spine moves, all elastic
As he weaves his way through tubes of plastic
But the routes he takes are quite stochastic

...and that's why none of my songs have lyrics.

"At load time a thing can be constructed from several thing parts. At run time these parts will all be combined into one big thing but at load time it is sometimes easy to be able to split the thing in parts so that you can have a more logical grouping of thing data."

You ever notice how your personality changes somewhat depending on the people you're around? I'm not sure it's about subconsciously trying to fit in, but I'm not sure it's not, either. Certain people just seem to make certain facets of my personality display themselves more prominently. Or am I just a freak?

I just thought of something weird. I was thinking about black holes and how in singularity "time and space are infinitely distorted" and what the heck kind of effect it might have if you could dive into one and actually survive. Then I thought, "Shit, you'd probably just die." Then I thought about dying and what I might like to have done to/with my body when the time comes and how it'd be cool if I could have my body, or at least a DNA sample like a strand of hair, shot out into space and maybe even into the general direction of a black hole.

Ok I said all that to ask this: Do you think we have a soul? What would it consist of? Is it made up of our personality, or our memories or the collective information in our brains? Do you think that when we die it gets relocated or just kind of 'evaporates?'

Ok now think about this: What if some super-advanced alien race obtained my DNA sample floating around in space and cloned me from it (assuming they could make a "perfect copy" the way I am now, and not using methods like we currently use for cloning). Do you think my 'soul' would be placed into the new-me body?

(I realize that they probably couldn't do this with *just* a strand of hair.. just assuming. They might have to have my brain 100% intact or something to do all of that....)

Of course, if they were that much more superior, then they might just examine the DNA and laugh, "CARBON-BASED! HAAAAWWWW!!"

How's that for a random geeky thought? .. or plain weird.

political whining

The american political system sucks. No matter what your political views, there's bound to be a candidate with a platform you can agree with, and they won't get elected. Ever. Because everyone knows that only the democratic or the republican candidate can get elected, and so the vast majority of voters (being the vast minority of the population, because people have sensed how futile it all is) will only vote for one of the two. I call this the Wrong Lizard Principle; those familiar with the writings of Adams will understand why.

So since we've only got two candidates, they're both desperately after more than half the votes in the entire country. They can't afford to concentrate on ideas that will improve the country, or the world... only the ideas that have the most possible mass appeal. There's some correlation, but it's not the same. More importantly, these are politicians. People willing to devote all facets of their lives to the accumulation of power. Such people are not to be trusted. But who else can we vote for?

No solutions here. Just bitching.

Asymmetrical bodies

A friend of mine at work told me about this SF novel he read that featured aliens who had asymmetrical bodies. And the more I thought about it, the more weird the concept became to me. Because I can't think of any animals more complex than protozoans that aren't symmetrical.

Yes, I realize that some animals such as lobsters and such have a large claw and a small claw, and that as a general rule nothing living is perfectly symmetrical. But we usually have the same number of limbs on the opposing sides of our body. It really makes sense: if you have to move, having one side be significantly more weighted is not the most efficient way to about it. Not to say we can't adapt to asymmetry: spiders with seven legs get along fine most of the time, as do people with one arm. Sure it's more awkward, but we deal. But still, that's not our default state. Nature seems to favor symmetry.

Oh wait, shit, I just thought of fish. Specifically, that one fish that's flat and essentially has all its bits on top and floats along on the ocean. Sun fish? Moon fish? Uhhh. So scrap "no animals." How about any animals that aren't exclusively aquatic?

Hopefully, we're all taking steps towards keeping our PCs secure. It's terribly important to have a firewall, virus scanner, spybot and popup blockers. I was just wondering what people are using and what have you used that SUCKS!?

My stuff:
Virus Scan: AVG
Firewall: Zone Alarm
Spybot blocker: Spybot Search and Destroy
Popup Blocker: Builtin one in Mozilla

All these progs work fine for me (as far as I know). I also use some other programs for general system maintenance.
